Paraza is a rapidly growing research organization which offers a dynamic and collaborative work environment where scientific excellence, innovation and creativity are at the forefront. The company is staffed by talented chemists and biologists and currently has approximately 140 employees.

Biochemistry Scientist job description

The biology department at Paraza has an opportunity for a biochemist who will generate purified proteins and develop biochemical assays needed to drive drug discovery projects.  You should also be able to perform enzymological and biophysical experiments to determine the mechanism of action of small molecule inhibitors. At Paraza we work on a diverse project portfolio covering many disease areas; therefore, the ideal candidate will have a wide skill set and an ability to successfully transition between projects and research areas.

Key activities may include:

  • Use of purified proteins to develop and perform 96- and 384-well plate biochemical assays for small molecule inhibitors
  • Enzymological and biophysical characterization of small molecule mechanism of action, using spectroscopy of various types, radiometric methods, mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry and other techniques
  • Quantitative data analysis using appropriate mathematical models and data fitting procedures
  • Expression of proteins from bacteria, insect cells or mammalian cells and purification using multiple types of chromatography
  • Interpretation of analyzed data and proposal of follow-up experiments
  • Regular communication of results and ideas to company management and customers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD. in biochemistry or closely related discipline. Postdoctoral experience preferred. Alternatively an M.Sc. in biology with at least seven years of work experience.
  • Recognized abilities in the use of purified proteins to address structural or mechanistic questions using multiple biochemical and/or biophysical techniques
  • High level of self-confidence and a demonstrated ability to propose new directions for research or novel solutions to biology/drug discovery problems
  • Motivation to build on your current knowledge by developing expertise in new techniques and new disease areas
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English: oral, written, presentations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in protein expression and purification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of small molecule drug discovery, including necessary laboratory activities to support advancement of lead optimization projects
  • Experience in establishing the mechanism of action of small molecule drugs
  • Experience in setting up, performing, and troubleshooting 96/384-well plate assays
  • Experience with liquid handling work stations and other automation.
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and performance of cell biology experiments
  • Working knowledge of French
